Finding ideal size for a JTextPane/JEditorPane?!?

I am trying to create a StyledDocument on the fly, add styled text to it, and then display it in a JTextPane that is exactly the right size to contain the text, no larger, no smaller.

How can I calculate the ideal rectangle that some arbitrary styled text (multi size, multi font) will take up?

Calling getPreferredSize() on the JTextPane after setting the document either returns useless values or generates a generic Exception with a null message.
